For this studio project, we worked in a team of three to provide out client, Rocking the Boat, a new facility in the Bronx, with a new design for a plot of land they lease from The Point. This meant that the once the land lease had expired, this facility would be useful and manageable for The Point. It was important to maintain existing facilities during construction and protect the new design from future flooding. To do this, we raised the ground flood by 3’ to mitigate flooding. This went hand in hand with further developing the neighborhood park, Hunts Point Park. We added flood walls and made the park more pedestrian and boat friendly, including design of a pedestrian bridge spanning to Soundview Park across the Bronx River. We proposed a phased approach that allowed operating at Rocking the Boat to continue during construction of the new facility. There was a unique relationship between the client and owner of the site, which provoked us to design a completely modular system that would allow the two organizations to alter the buildings as their needs changed over time.
